Godolphin Toasts The Deeds Of Lonhro

The Godolphin team celebrated a massive weekend of black type success with two Group One winners among four stakes winners by Darley sires.

Lonhro was the star of the show with a pair of his exciting young colts landing the G1 Randwick Guineas on Saturday and the G3 Black Opal Stakes in Canberra on Sunday.

Teofilo chimed in with a second win at the elite level by his outstanding son Happy Clapper in the G1 Canterbury Stakes at Randwick and Street Boss contributed with a win in Canberra’s Listed National Sprint by his locally-trained sprinter Tougherthantherest.

The standout was the brilliant performance by Godolphin’s new star Kementari in the Randwick Guineas, taking Lonhro’s tally of G1 winners to 10.

It was the third stakes win and atonement for his narrow and unlucky loss in the G1 Caulfield Guineas in the spring.

On Sunday the well-bred colt Encryption delivered Lonhro his 73rd stakes winner when he won the Black Opal.

Vin Cox, the recently appointed managing director of Godolphin Australia, was taken with the performances and heaped praise on Lonhro as the son of Octagonal is rising 20.

“The old boy still has it,” Cox said. “He just keeps producing topline performers and is close to 800 winners overall.

“His legacy is likely to continue for some time to come as his son Pierro – who was rated the best juvenile colt since Luskin Star – is currently Australia’s leading second season sire.”

Lonhro’s list of G1 winners comprises Pierro, Exosphere, Denman, Impending, Mental, Benfica, Bounding, Beaded, The Conglomerate and Kementari.

Kementari and Encryption possess brilliant pedigrees that make them valuable stud prospects.

KEMENTARI Horseform (Lonhro x Yavanna by Redoute’s Choice) has now had nine starts for four wins, three of them at stakes level, with another three placings for prize money earnings of $1,368,250.

He is one of two stakes winners for the twice-winning mare Yavanna, being a half-brother to Listed winner and G1 placed Telperion (Street Cry).

Yavanna is a daughter of the dual G3 winner Wild Queen (Loup Sauvage), a half-sister to G2 winner So Gorgeous (Brief Truce) and G3 winner Cumbria (Lake Coniston).

Kementari has a two-year-old half-brother by Sepoy, a yearling half sister by Reset and a weanling half brother by Street Boss.

Yavanna was covered again last year by Lonhro.

ENCRYPTION Horseform (Lonhro x Guelph by Exceed And Excel): He is the first foal out of four-time G1 winning filly Guelph and had been placed in three of his four starts at stakes level in Melbourne before the Black Opal.

Guelph is a three-quarter sister to the stakes-placed Coruscate (Exceed And Excel) and a half-sister to the G2 Todman Stakes winner Ghibellines (Shamardal).

Encryption’s second dam is the G1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes winner Camarilla (Elusive Quality), a sister to Listed winner Induna and a blood-sister to Golden Slipper Stakes winner and sire Sepoy.

Guelph has a yearling sister to Encryption and a weanling brother and was covered by Medaglia d’Oro last spring.

HAPPY CLAPPER Horseform (Teofilo x Busking by Encosta De Lago): The 7YO gelding is one of 72 stakes winners by Teofilo, a classic winning son of Galileo who shuttled to Australia in 2016 and 2017 after a three-year absence.

Bred and raced by former Canberra bookmaker Michael Thomas, Happy Clapper has now won 10 races and placed in 11 of his 32 career starts for prize money earnings of $3,875,800.

He is one of six named foals out of the winning mare Busking, a half-sister to the dual G3 winner Thankgodyou’rehere (Secret Savings).

He is a half-brother to four winners, including the G3 placed Gig (Commands) and is also a half-brother to Saturday’s G2 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes Not A Single Cent (Not A Single Doubt).

Happy Clapper’s family includes the Listed winner Pride Of Tarlton (Bureaucracy) and stakes-placed Green Waters (Opera Prince).

Busking, who died in January last year, has left a yearling colt by Not A Single Cent.

Race Synopsis: Kementari is now unbeaten in all three starts this preparation and he capped his very promising young career by taking out this Group One race at his ninth start. He was settled nicely back in seventh place (one off the rails) behind a strong pace (first 1000m 59.00) before improving rounding the home turn. He then sprinted quickly, dashed to the front on passing the 200m and went on to score impressively. Pierata settled in fifth place on the rails from his inside barrier (1), improved between runners in the straight and kept fighting gamely for a very good second. Trapeze Artist showed good early pace and crossed to settle outside the leader (Condor) at a solid tempo (first 1000m 59.00). He briefly got to the front at the 300m and then did well in holding on to take third after his early efforts. Ace High settled in sixth place, one off the rails, made a wide move from the 600m to challenge at the 300m. He then kept battling on very well to finish (2.3 lengths) fourth in a good performance at his third start since winning the Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) in November. Siege Of Quebec settled in fourth place, made a wide move approaching the home turn and battled on well for (2.5 lengths) fifth.
