Fell Swoop, Victorem Win Country Trials

Crack Canberra sprinter Fell Swoop warmed up for his autumn campaign with a barrier trial win at Goulburn on Monday.

Trainer Matt Dale is preparing Fell Swoop for the autumn from his satellite stable at Moruya on the NSW south coast.

Fell Swoop Horseform has been in work at Moruya since December and Monday’s trial will advance Dale’s plan to have him ready to resume in Melbourne on Saturday week in the G1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield. Fell Swoop finished second in the 2016 Oakleigh Plate and was sixth last year.

The Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on March 10 will also be considered for Fell Swoop as he heads towards the $2.5 million TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on April 7.

Fell Swoop has contested 11 Group One races without a win but has been placed five times including a second and third in the last two runnings of the TJ Smith Stakes.

In Monday’s trial over 800m Jay Ford sat four and five wide, keeping Fell Swoop under a big hold over the last 400m as he cruised to the line in the middle of the track to win the heat by a neck.

His time of 46.71 with his last 600m in 33.71 seconds was more than 1.2 seconds faster than the other trial over 800m.

AT TAREE on Monday the impressive three-year-old Victorem won a trial over 1000m to get his Country Championship program back on track after he missed a start at Port Macquarie last week.

Ridden by Ben Looker, Victorem Horseform settled at the back of his heat before slicing through the field on the turn and running to the line under a big grip to win the heat by more than two lengths.

His time for the 1000m was 59.13 (last 600m 35.45), some two seconds faster than the other 1000m trial on the day.

Trainer Jenny Graham has Victorem set to join stablemates Awesome Pluck and Portatorio in the first of the Country Championship qualifying heats at Port Macquarie on Sunday.
