Saturday, 3 May 2025: SPREYTON trainer Trent Wells takes four of the seven horses he has in work to the races at Spreyton on Sunday and he rates them all a chance of earning prizemoney.
His lightly raced four-year-old
Star Walkin'
looms as his best winning chance in the Stall Gate Kiosk Class 1 Handicap over 1350m and given the ease with which he demolished his rivals to win a maiden in Launceston two weeks ago he is likely to start favourite.
Star Walkin' (Stratosphere-Liffeybel) had two unplaced starts for Shirley Berger before being transferred to
Trent Wells
in October last year and the gelding delivered another unplaced effort at his first try for his new stable.
The son of Stratosphere resumed last month for a luckless first-up fifth but followed up with an emphatic victory in a maiden over 1220m in Launceston on Good Friday.
"I was impressed with Star Walkin' s maiden win and if he can win again on Sunday stepping up in distance, I'd say we have a fairly good horses on our hands," Wells said.
"It's a good class one field that looks to have some good speed in the race, so the wide draw (11) shouldn't be too much of a problem because he'll get back and will have time to settle."
Wells will saddle up Getha Groove On and last start maiden winner
Platinum Reggae
in race three, the Tasmanian Horse Transport Class 1 Handicap, over 1150m.
"Getcha Groove On Has done really well since her third here at Devonport and she is ready to step up to the slightly longer trip.
She's a winner here (Devonport) over the shorter trip (1009m) in January and we just think she's now looking for the extra ground.
"Platinum Reggae has a bit of quality about her and she was impressive in winning a maiden here at Devonport on Easter Monday.
She has drawn wide and that's the only query with her winning chances, so it will be up to Darma (Anthony Darmanin) to weave some of his magic to get her home."
Former Victorian gelding
Leo Davinci
makes up Wells' quartet of runners in the Kevin Sharkie Maiden /Class 1 over 1650m and he has good enough recent form to suggest he can break his maiden status at his 10th career start.
Leo Davinci is coming off two minor placings, the latest a second on the synthetic in a 1350-metre maiden on Easter Monday.
"I think this is Leo's best chance to win a race since he joined our stable late last year.
"He opened with a close-up fourth here at Spreyton and he improved at each of his next two starts, so he is definitely ready to win.
"He should really appreciate stepping up to the 1650m trip and he goes into the race in really good order."
The first race in Devonport is scheduled to start at 11.58am with the last of eight set to go at 4.11pm.
All races will be broadcast on Tasracing Live via the website at tasracing.com.au as well as on Sky1.
