Golden ticket proves elusive for Aussie surfer Robinson

Sunday, 4 May 2025:

Australian surfer Jack Robinson has sensationally bombed out of the Gold Coast Pro in the elimination round, just a week after winning at Bells Beach.

Robinson finished third in his first-round heat on Saturday, thrusting him into the dreaded elimination round on Sunday.

Up against fellow Australians Morgan Cibilic and Julian Wilson, Robinson could only muster a two-wave total of 7.06.

Wildcard Wilson won the heat with a two-wave total of 15.27, with Cibilic (13.33) also doing enough to progress.

Wilson's massive air-reverse to post an 8.17 was the highlight of the all-Australian battle.

"I feel like in that heat I was coming up against two of the in-form surfers from Bells," Wilson said.

"Those are the heats you want, but damn they're hard, so I was really happy to come out on top with that one.

"I'm loving it, to be honest. It felt nice to land three from three then and throw in some variation with a grab.

"I was pretty amped up after that. It's nice to be here again and feel at home in this very uncomfortable environment."

In the second elimination men's heat of the day, Connor O'Leary and Barron Mamiya progressed at the expense of Australian Jordan Lawler.

American Griffin Colapinto also did enough to reach the third round.

Robinson shot up to third spot on the world rankings after his success at Bells Beach, but his poor result on the Gold Coast is set to tumble him down the pecking order.

When the surf action resumes, Wilson faces a tough task in the third round when he goes up against star Brazilian Italo Ferreira.

Ethan Ewing takes on Cibilic in what is set to be another entertaining battle.

On the women's side, Brisa Hennessy failed to progress past the elimination round on Sunday, with Lakey Peterson and Bella Kenworthy making it through ahead of her.

In the other women's eliminator, Sawyer Lindblad and Luana Silva got through ahead of Nadia Erostarbe.

When action resumes, the women's third round will feature some heavyweight match-ups.

Eight-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore, competing in her first event since 2023, will go up against 2024 world champion Caitlin Simmers.

And in an all-Australian showdown, Tyler Wright takes on Sally Fitzgibbons.
